Some Porsche interiors call for restoration. Others are an opportunity to create something more personal.
This Porsche Pepita upholstery project in Singapore began with an all-black Cayman 981 interior — understated, functional and unmistakably modern. The owner wanted a very different character, so we reworked the seats around one of the most recognisable themes associated with classic Porsche interiors: Pepita-pattern fabric paired with leather.
For this transformation, the black upholstery was replaced with warm cognac-brown leather, while contrasting black-and-white Pepita-pattern automotive fabric was introduced across the seat centres. The combination changes the atmosphere of the cabin without changing the original form of the Cayman seats.
The result is not an attempt to make a 981 look old. It is a contemporary Porsche interior with a deliberate reference to an earlier era.
Why Pepita?
Long before today’s predominantly leather sports-car interiors, patterned textile inserts gave many classic European interiors their distinctive character. Pepita became particularly recognisable among Porsche enthusiasts, and its geometric black-and-white pattern still creates an immediate visual connection with classic Porsche design.
The Pepita-pattern centre sections break up the visual weight of an otherwise leather-dominated seat, while the cognac-brown surrounds introduce warmth into the predominantly black cockpit. Instead of competing with the original seat shape, the two materials emphasise it.
From All Black to Cognac & Pepita
The original seats were first stripped of their black upholstery so that the existing panel construction could be reproduced around the Cayman 981 seat contours.
Rather than simply changing the leather colour, we used the centre panels to create the main visual feature of the interior. Pepita-pattern fabric runs through the backrest and seat cushion, framed by cognac leather across the bolsters and upper sections.
The centre armrest was retrimmed in matching cognac leather and finished with an embossed Porsche crest, carrying the colour theme through the centre console rather than leaving the seats as an isolated modification.
The transformation is dramatic, but the upholstery still follows the architecture of the original interior.
